Frozen Hearts
Frozen Hearts is an optional Side Area in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. It's a pretty elaborate area, complete with an optional boss and a new Nevron Quest. This snowy peak becomes available after you complete Monoco's Station, if you take the exit to the east. Here's what you need to know about this chilly locale!
This guide is a work in progress!
How to Get to Frozen Hearts
After you complete the main story events in Monoco's Station, go east past the Grandis' area and leave exit to the continent. Here, you'll have access to a snowy region with some side areas, including Frozen Hearts at the furthest east point. If you want to fully complete the area, you'll want to be around level 50! However, if you just want to grab the journal, you can go in now and try to avoid enemy combat.
Frozen Hearts - Expedition Journal
As you enter, look to your left for a red glow. Inside of the cave emitting it, you'll find a large amount of Chroma.
Head into the area and, as you arrive, cross the tracks and into the area behind the snow-covered train. In a small cave to the east behind it, you'll find the journal that belongs to Expedition 51.
After you collect this journal, go into the cave to the west and climb the rope to proceed upwards. Then, go forward to find another checkpoint flag courtesy of Expedition 51.
Glacial Falls
As you arrive at this area, head south , then go west at the path's end to get a Colour of Lumina among some crates.
Then, go east towards the stairs. Climb them, and follow the track to its end. There, you'll find a Colour of Lumina to collect.
Then, take the rope down to the brilliant white Nevrons ahead. You'll discover a Danseuse Teacher, who will test your parry skills with an onslaught of attacks.
How to Complete the Danseuse Teacher Quest
To kick off this Quest, talk to the Danseuse Teacher and progress the conversation until you have the option to select the "Okay... I'm ready" dialogue prompt to begin the Danseuse Teacher's challenge.
When the dance begins, you must parry all incoming projectiles to perform a counterattack on the Danseuse Teacher. The Danseuse Teacher's move consists of 15 strikes, and you must parry them all without being hit a single time, or you'll need to try again.
However, just because you get hit once or twice doesn't mean you've failed. If hit, you simply need to survive the Danseuse Teacher's complete attack cycle. When the 15-hit attack cycle concludes, the Danseuse Teacher will load up another attack. This will essentially refresh the challenge, granting you another opportunity to perform a counterattack on your elegant opponent.
When the Danseuse Teacher begins a new attack cycle, she'll start another turn, and the words "Parry all incoming attacks to Counter" will reappear at the top of your screen. But if your character dies in battle, you can restart the Danseuse Teacher's trial by speaking to her again after the failed screen.
Completing the Danseuse Teacher's trial will likely require a few attempts as you familiarize yourself with her rhythm. While this isn't the case with all the Nevrons you'll encounter in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, parrying the Danseuse Teacher's strikes becomes a bit easier when you listen out for the attack's sound cues, so headphones are highly recommended.
When the Danseuse Teacher's projectile is fully charged and ready to be thrown, you'll hear a brief sound effect to indicate that it's time to parry. Another important note is that the Danseuse Teacher's attack has three slightly different patterns. Two of them are thrown from her side, and in the third, she'll jump in the air. This airborne strike takes slightly longer to charge than the other two attack patterns, so don't let it throw off your rhythm!
After successfully performing a counterattack to complete this Side Quest, the Danseuse Teacher will reward you with the Danseuse Outfit for Lune!
Head back to the checkpoint flag and take the right path at the fork.
After you grapple across a gap and descend a rope, you'll find a Manor door and the Chromatic Veilleur. It's a tough fight, but if you take on the Chromatic Veilleur, you'll be rewarded for your troubles with a large amount of XP, upgrade materials, and the Energising Burn Pictos.
Whether you take on the tough Nevron or ignore it, head into the Manor door. Near the harp, you'll find one of the best titles for a record you've gotten yet: "Clea! Don't Pull Your Sister's Hair!" After that, open up the doors and leave the Manor.
Right behind the door, you can find a Chroma Catalyst sitting at a workbench. Then, keep heading east, looking to your left for some Chroma among some wrecked boxes. Head deeper into the cave until you emerge.
Go left to find a Paint Cage! The first lock is on the path towards the cage, among the spikes to the south.
The second lock is attached to the crane above you! Look straight up as you approach the cage, and you should be able to see its glow. You might need to reposition yourself to be able to get a good shot!
The final lock is above and behind the Paint Cage, attached to the building.
Where the cage once was, you'll find the Anti-Freeze Pictos!
Head the other direction to the southwest, watching to your right to collect some Chroma on the way. Activate the orb to create a rope to descend, then climb the one on top of the train car. This will take you back to the entrance!
Go back to the Glacial Falls checkpoint and go left. Then, turn right towards the cave. Behind the enemies, you can find a Chroma Catalyst. Then, climb the rope to the right of them.
Grab the Chroma in crates to the left, then head forward towards the Nevrons. Behind them, you can find even more Chroma!
Head further forward and grapple across the gap. Climb the handholds ahead of you and go right. By an impaled Nevron, you can grab a Chroma Catalyst.
Then, go south and grapple to the train car. Activate the orb and descend the rope.
On top of this car, you'll find a Burn Affinity Pictos!
Then, head back to the handholds and climb straight up. Defeat the Stalact to the right to get access to the Chroma behind it. You'll also get an upgrade to the Stalum weapon for Maelle.
As you keep climbing, hug the western side of the mountain and climb ledges when you see them. At the top, you'll find a Chroma Catalyst near an impaled Nevron.
Then, head straight north to find and fight (or avoid) another Stalact. Behind it, go right to find a Petank at a piano! Chase it west to get it on its pedestal. As usual, defeating it will reward you with a bunch of upgrade materials, including a Recoat!
Proceed north through the narrow corridor, and you'll find another checkpoint.
Iced Heart
Head left from this flag, and near a fallen Danseuse, collect a Colour of Lumina. Then, head back to the checkpoint flag and go forward to the north and climb the trains.
As you go forward, grapple across the trains high in the sky. As you do, you'll eventually find a Gestral merchant! Make a detour to chat and browse his collection.
You'll find a couple outfits here: Pelerin for Verso, and Danseuse for Sciel.
Then, head to the wall to the east. You'll find a couple of Chroma Catalysts-- and a Mime! For beating it, you'll earn the Short haircut for Maelle! Go north in this area and you'll find another Chroma Catalyst near some crates.
Then, continue climbing the floating trains. At the apex, you'll find the final checkpoint-- and the final fight of the area!
Boss Battle: Gargant
The Gargant can switch between Fire and Ice stances, much like the other Nevrons found in Frozen Hearts. It’s also similar to the Chromatic Danseuse boss fight in that way. So, like that fight, you need to bring both Fire and Ice skills to exploit both weaknesses. Also, do not equip Fire or Ice weapons!
The boss is weak to Ice in Fire stance, but weak to Fire in Ice stance. It also absorbs Ice in Ice stance and absorbs Fire in Fire stance. This is why Ice and Fire weapons shouldn’t be equipped here – you need to be able to control which element you attack with.
Gargant Info
- Weakness: Fire (in Ice stance), Ice (in Fire stance)
- Resistance: Absorbs Fire (in Fire stance), Absorbs Ice (in Ice stance)
- Weak Spot Location: N/A
Gargant Attack List | ||
---|---|---|
Attack | Description | How to Parry/Dodge |
Gargant lands a series of punches | The boss does a single-target three-hit combo with its fists | The hits come quickly, one after the other. Parry/dodge just as the arms start to get close to you. |
A Snow Storm arrives | The boss adds more hits to its combo | N/A |
Gargant switches stance | The boss switches between Fire and Ice stance | N/A |
Gargant throws even more punches | The boss does a single-target six-hit combo. | The first four hits are the same as the previous combo, but the last two are slow slams. Be sure to wait for the pause before the final two hits and parry/dodge as the arm comes down, once again. |
Gargant freezes a character | The boss fires an Ice beam that freezes a random target | Parry/dodge just after the beam is charged up to stay safe here. You can also shoot the Fire orbs that appear to immediately thaw the frozen character. |
Gargant performs a smash combo | The boss does a four-hit combo that hits the entire party | The first three hits are slow, two-handed slams, and the final hit is a one-handed slam. All four hits are slow, so try not to parry/dodge too early. Press the button just before the arms make contact with your character. |
Gargant yells | The boss fires a single projectile at a single target | The projectile shoots up, then curves down in an arc. Parry/dodge when it’s just above your head. |
Gargant tears up the field with his arms | The boss does a four-hit combo that hits the whole party | The boss’s arms swipe across the arena back and forth, and the final hit is a slam. Parry/dodge as the arms move toward you to stay safe. |
The Gargant hits hard, but it’s relatively slow compared to most other bosses you’ve fought thus far. Its combos shouldn’t feel too quick, but you run the risk of being Frozen if you get hit by its Ice beam. This is why we suggest equipping the Anti-Freeze Pictos/Lumina that you can find elsewhere in Frozen Hearts.
Pay attention to the Fire and Ice stance switches, and only use the opposite element to attack. You can also force stance switches by attacking with the correct weakness.
Maelle, Lune, and Monocco are all great choices here because of their access to Fire and Ice skills. Maelle’s Rain of Fire and Pyrolyse, and Monocco’s Stalact Punches and Danseuse Waltz are solid picks for this boss fight. Maelle only has access to Fire, but that’s fine as long as you use her other attacks while the boss is in Fire stance.
Lune, on the other hand, has access to both elements. For Ice, she can use Crippling Tsunami to slow the boss and Thermal Transfer to gain four AP if the boss is burning. For Fire, Wildfire and Hell are some of her best options.
Gargant Rewards
After defeating the Gargant, you obtain a Level 22 Snowim for Lune and a Level 22 Anti-Burn Pictos, which provides Burn immunity. You also get a few rare upgrade materials. The Eternal Ice can be used to complete a side quest at Monoco Station.
- Lvl. 22 Snowim - Lune Weapon
- Anti-Burn Picto
- 1x Eternal Ice
- 3x Grandiose Chroma Catalyst
With this, you're done with Frozen Hearts! Head straight ahead to exit the area.
